Gulf Oil Spill; Accident or Carelessness?
.We have all seen the disastrous consequences of the Deep Horizon Gulf Oil Spill. Human, plant, and animal’s lives have been lost. The entire Gulf of Mexico has been irreversibly polluted creating large “dead zones” where no nothing will ever grow or live in again. “As a health precaution, U.S. authorities have closed all fishing in 25 percent of Gulf of Mexico U.S. federal waters.” (MSNBC) The environmental, political, and economic impact associated with this oil spill is enormous.
This story shows how un-prepared BP/US/entire Oil Industry is, for a spill of this magnitude and highlights the reason Off-Shore Oil Drilling is UNSAFE! In the last 45 days, we’ve also seen the blatant disregard for safety in the equipment used to drill off-shore as well as the lack of real governmental oversight and the shear amount of corruption between Big Oil and our legislators. Even the two committee chairs appointed to investigate this disaster aren’t impartial from the interests of the oil industry as one serves on the board for a major oil company. It is becoming more and more painfully obvious this spill was no accident and instead the result of greed and carelessness by Oil Titans who are allowed to run wild.
Accidents occur when safety precautions fail due to human error or mechanical malfunction. Carelessness occurs when safety precautions are ignored and mechanics aren’t properly maintained. “As Deepwater Horizon crewmembers angrily testified on Capitol Hill Thursday that BP and Transocean cut corners on safety, BP President Lamar McKay acknowledged that the company failed to recognize early warnings.” While this spill may not have been pre-meditated, it was a powder-keg waiting to explode.
